The True Riches, and Seeking Them

Pray for the people of God, that their conception of riches and especially true riches would be an example to others. (Proverbs 23.4-5; Matthew 6.25-34; Luke 16.1-15)

  1. Pray that the people of God would not love this world, nor be drawn off proper devotion to the Lord by this world’s goods, pleasures, and riches, but would be heavenly minded, seeking true riches. (1 John 2.15-16; Proverbs 23.4-5)
  2. Pray tat God’s people would see the folly of maintaining a love for this world while professing a love for Christ, that we would see that we cannot “serve two masters.” (Luke 16.13)
  3. Pray for a willingness among the people of God to part with all earthly pleasures, goods, wealth, status, etc. if necessary to maintain their love and loyalty to the Lord, that we would not compromise faith and sound doctrine for any comforts in this world, but would follow Him, even through the valley of the shadow of death. (Mark 10.29)
  4. Pray for focus for the people of God, especially concerning young adults and families, that they would set the trajectories of their lives seeking true riches—faith, hope, love, holiness—those spiritual riches of Christ, rather than the pursuits of their worldly peers. (Mark 4.13-20)
  5. Pray for the children and young ones of the Church, that as they are pointed toward their adulthood, they would choose out those callings and occupations that will conduce to the glory of the Lord, according to Scripture, and that whatever calling they proceed to take, that it would be accompanied with seeking first the Kingdom of God. (Prov. 16.25; Eccl. 9.4ff)
  6. Pray that none within the bounds of the visible Church would purpose to be rich, but that our purpose would be to be rich in good works, in faith, charity, obedience toward the Lord, and that we would look to the Lord to supply all our needs, as only He knows best what we truly need. (1 Timothy 6.1-12)
  7. Pray that the Lord would grant contentedness with what we have, even little, and that we would prefer that little with godliness and peace in the Holy Ghost over a wide house and many earthly things. Pray that the people of God would flee covetousness, which is idolatry. (Proverbs 17.1; Colossians 3.5)
  8. Pray that the people of God would be heavenly minded, not setting their affections on things of the earth, but evaluating rightly the good things of the next life that God gives, setting their affections on things above, where their true habitation is, where they are going, to that inheritance that does not fade away. (Colossians 3.1-3; 1 Peter 1.3-5)
