The Greatest Commandment: Love the Lord your God

Pray that the Lord would Circumcise the hearts of His people, to love Him.

  1. Pray concerning nominal Christianity, mercenary Christianity, cultural Christianity, and all other kinds of profession where the Lord is not the focus of our love, for conviction by sound preaching, for regeneration by the Spirit of God, for the circumcision of our hearts, that the Lord would be the true, and primary object of our love. (Deut. 30.6)
  2. Pray that this loving God with our whole selves would transcend mere affection, and would be that "commandment-keeping love" that Christ presses to our hearts. (John 14.15)
  3. Pray that this love for the Lord would manifest itself not only in obedience to His revealed will, but that with great affection we would love His Commandments as we love Him, that His Commandments would not be grievous to us, but the joy and rejoicing of our hearts. (Jeremiah 15.16; Psalm 119.48; 1 John 5.1-3)
  4. Pray that in loving the Lord our God, we would love our neighbor as well, according to God’s design and will, preferring our brother, honoring him, looking with care upon his well-being, bearing his burden, and bearing our own burden, in the Lord, according to His Word. (Romans 12.10; Philippians 2.3; Galatians 6.2-5)
  5. Pray as we love the Lord our God, that we would also love our enemies, pray for them, do good to them, and follow our heavenly Father’s example in doing good to those who despise us. (Matthew 5.43-48)
  6. Pray that the people of God would not requite evil for evil, but that we would leave place for the vengeance of God, that our true enemies would be those who are the enemies of God, praying for their conversion, that God would be glorified in subduing His enemies to Himself. (Romans 12.17-21; 1 Thessalonians 5.15; 1 Peter 3.9)
  7. Pray that the people of God would rise to the defense of the truly oppressed, that the Lord would grant wisdom in caring for others, that the Church would not encourage the indolent, but relieve the truly needy—that she would be wise in her works of benevolence, that the Name of the Lord would be glorified. (2 Thessalonians 3.7-15)
  8. Pray that in loving the Lord our God with all our hearts, we would worship Him according to His commands, and that all our service would be toward His glory, whether we eat or drink—that we would have a ready profession of faith upon our lips at all times, with an answer to all who ask of the hope that lies within us. (1 Peter 3.15; 1 Corinthians 10.31)
  9. Pray that then people of God would “know the Lord their God, and serve Him with a perfect heart,” and exercise all godly means to that good end. (1 Chronicles 28.9)
