The Duty of God’s People to pray for their civil societies

Pray for our nation, for repentance from national sins, and an establishment in righteousness.

  1. Pray for our nation, for repentance from national sins: Abortion and all devaluation of human life as the image of God, Indebtedness, Economic Waste, theft, and Graft, Unconstitutional Federal Orders, Suppression of Truth and the True Religion, and many other sins, that the Lord would give repentance. (Isaiah 49.22-23)
  2. Pray that our nation would not meddle in the affairs of others sovereign nations, that we would stay within our constitutional and territorial boundaries, that we would defend and protect our own borders and citizens. (Deuteronomy 2.4; 32.8)
  3. Pray that our civil leaders would know their place regarding the true religion, that they would buy the truth and sell it not, that they would know to bow the knee to Christ, and take counsel from godly ministers, that we may lead quiet and peaceable lives in all godliness and honesty. (1 Peter 2.1-8)
  4. Pray that our leaders would not prey upon the poor and oppressed, but that real and meaningful reforms would be enacted to deliver them from oppression and dependency, granting them liberty to pursue lawful and meaningful callings, to serve the Lord and others. (Ephesians 4.28)
  5. Pray that perverse and sinful laws, such as the validation of unlawful divorces and marriages, excessive taxation, calling evil good and god evil, would be repealed, and that our leaders would be informed by that which is true, the Scriptures, in all their deliberations, and that they may be free from violence and threat in their duty. (Deuteronomy 17.14-20)
  6. Pray that our civil leaders would be converted to Christ, that the Lord would grant that civil leaders should come under the influences of the Gospel of Christ, that they may learn to kiss the Son, call upon His name, and order their callings in ways that would be pleasing to Him. (Psalm 2.1-12)
  7. Pray for our citizens, that we would desire not partisans, not those who would buy our votes with cheap trinkets, but for those who will rule in righteousness, even if that presents difficulty for our own temporal estate. Pray for our fellow citizens to be converted to Christ, and that they would desire His glory in the civil estate. (Isaiah 32.1-4)
  8. Pray for those who are responsible for law enforcement at the civil justice level, that they would convict and punish the evil and acquit the innocent. (Deuteronomy 25.1)
  9. Pray for our peace officers, for godly and just use of their authority, and for safety as they keep the peace. (Luke 3.14)
