The Devotional Life of God’s People

Pray that God’s people would be diligent in Public, Private, and in Secret worship.

  1. Pray for increased awareness regarding the importance of the public worship in the Church, that the Lord’s ordinary way of convincing and converting sinners, comforting and building up believers unto salvation, and edifying the body of Christ might be highly esteemed in the Church, unto faithfulness in attendance, personal preparation, Sabbath keeping, and that the Lord would bless these means to His glory. (1 Timothy 4.12-16)
  2. Pray for the same awareness regarding family worship, that it would be rightly used unto the spiritual education and edification of families together, that the Lord would grant godliness in our families, and draw covenant children, and mothers and fathers, to Himself through these means. (Deuteronomy 6.4-9)
  3. Pray that the same importance would be attached to secret worship by God’s people, that we would not neglect spending time in the Word of the Lord, and in prayer and meditation daily, and several times a day, as we live our lives not for ourselves, but for Him who loved us and gave Himself for us. (Psalm 119.164)
  4. Pray that God’s people would give proper priority to these various devotional activities: That godly public worship would be preferred over the others, according to God’s design, that family worship would not become a substitute for the worship of the Church, and that we would also maintain our callings in righteousness, while worshipping the Lord according to His commands. (Exodus 20.8-11; Numbers 16.1-3; 1 Chr. 7-43; Luke 2.42; 4.16; John 18.20)
  5. Pray that the people of God would desire, and do, nothing but what the Lord has commanded in their devotions to Him, turning away from false piety and offering of their own desires, and that they would also rightly understand themselves to be living sacrifices, and as those who are not their own. (Romans 12.1-2; Micah 6.1-8; 1 Cor. 6.12-20)
  6. Pray that the people of God would have confidence in the Lord and His promises to meet with them in their various acts of devotion and worship of the Lord, that they might come to him with great anticipation of spiritual nourishment and growth, for an increase of grace, for a greater care in obedience and love for him and His Law. (Psalm 27.8)
  7. Pray that the Lord would patiently, and kindly remove all things detrimental to sincere devotion: hypocrisy, weariness, want of preparation, distraction, weakness or infirmity, error and human invention; and that He would increase our capacity to serve Him according to His Word, with strength and sincere devotion to Him. (1 Corinthians 16.15)
