The Care of the Heart

Pray for the people of God, that they would keep their hearts with all diligence.

  1. Pray for diligence in meditation upon Scripture, private prayer, attendance upon ordinances as that which gives positive input for the soul, that God’s people would saturate their minds with the Word, that the Lord would be pleased to give efficacy to such devotional efforts, that our hearts would be knit to Him. (Colossians 3.16)
  2. Pray for watchfulness over the hearts of God’s people—that each would take care only to allow wholesome things into the heart, that the evils of this world would be rightly judged, that God’s people might “approve the things that are excellent” and flee from evil influences, setting a good example to others. (Ephesians 5.8-16; Philippians 1.10)
  3. Pray that we would be of good use one to another, that we would encourage one another by words and example to watchfulness over our hearts, providing help to one another as superiors, inferiors, and equals, in the Church, in the family, and in the state, that our hearts might be purified from the evils of this age. (Proverbs 23.17-28)
  4. Pray for the ministry of the Gospel, that the Lord would be pleased, through the preaching of Christ, to call many to Himself, purifying their hearts by faith, and granting His sanctification to them. (1 Peter 1.22; Acts 15.9)
  5. Pray for discipline in our thoughts, that the Lord would be pleased to incline us to think on that which is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous, and praiseworthy, turning away from that which is defiled and defiling, that the meditations of our heart might be acceptable in His sight, through Jesus Christ. (Philippians 4.8; Psalm 19.14)
  6. Pray for the memory work that takes place in our Churches, that the Lord would be pleased to join with those efforts and press the principles of catechism, and Scripture truth into our minds, that we might learn to think God’s thoughts after Him, that we might have the “mind of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 2.15-16)
  7. Pray that our hearts would not decline to covetousness, but with all thankfulness and knowledge of what we truly deserve, we would live contentedly, without envy, and that the Lord would give joy as we think on His goodness. (Psalm 119.36)
  8. Pray for the affections of the Church, that she would be drawn to the things of God, to that which is holy and just, taking pleasure in goodness and uprightness, and having greater facility of heart toward that which is good. (Proverbs 8.13)
