The 9th Commandment, The Love of the Truth.

  1. Pray for the Church, seeing that God has given preaching and instruction as the means of her edification, that she would speak the truth, hear the truth, do all things for the truth, and nothing against the truth, that the Church would grow in grace and knowledge, that the Lord would purify the teacher of the Church. (2 Corinthians 13.7-8)
  2. Pray for the people of God, and their witness to the world, that they would use their words wisely, truthfully, with circumspection and honesty, that the world around us might know the truth. (Eph 4.25; Zech. 8.16; Eph. 4.25)
  3. Pray that we would have confidence in the Word of the Lord unto every good work, that the Truth of God’s Word, who is Truth itself, might reign over our speech, having confidence in the Word of the Lord, we would proceed in cheerfulness in obedience, and turn away from every false way. (2 Timothy 3.14-4.4)
  4. Pray for our society, that the love of lying and falsehood, and the false profession of its necessity, would give way to candor, just judgment, a recognition that as our Lord Jesus taught, the truth will make us free, and that lying leads to deprivation and bondage, that we might repent of telling lies. (John 8.31-37)
  5. Pray that the people of God would not gossip nor slander—that we would know to speak the truth, that we would protect the name of our neighbor. Pray that we would be always ready with a truthful commendation of others, that we would protect our neighbor’s reputation, and offer godly correction to him when appropriate. (Pro. 31.8; Lev. 19.17)
  6. Pray for an end to propagandizing, false advertisement, using words to manipulate and control, but that such speech would be replaced with edifying speech, apart from sinful exaggeration and sarcasm, that we would “speak peace” one to another in truth and sincerity. (Psalm 28.3)
  7. Pray for our institutions of higher learning, and for everywhere else, that lies would not be spoken as truth, that ungodly and unbiblical theories of knowledge, justice, human relations, economics, ethics, and every other branch of learning would submit to the Lord speaking in His Word. (1 Timothy 6.20; Acts 17.18-21; Colossians 2.8-18)
  8. Pray for a right use of oaths, vows, covenants, contracts, and other more binding arrangements between men and men, and men and God, that not only would our yea be yea, and nay, nay, but that special times of greater commitment would be spoken truly, that we would vow and pay, without equivocation or reservation. (Deut. 23.21; Matthew 5.33-37)
  9. Pray that the people of God would be valiant for the truth, trusting in the Word of the Lord. (Jeremiah 9.3)
