The 3rd Commandment, God’s Self-revelation

  1. Pray for the Church, that she might have proper reverence for God and His Word, that she would not twist it to her own destruction, that she would not hear the voice of strangers, but receiving the Word of God alone as God’s special self-revelation, she would reverence His holy name alone. (John 10.1-5)
  2. Pray that the people of God would not trust their own natural conception of God, but would search the Scripture to learn of Him, turning away from the idol-casting tendency of their minds, sitting at His feet, fleeing all false courses of knowing God, learning to worship the God who is. (Romans 1.18-28)
  3. Pray that the people of God, in addition to hearing sound preaching, and reading sound materials on who God is, would meditate often on His Person and perfections, distinguishing Him in their thoughts from all false gods, and from all mistakes in thinking of Him, that they might draw near to the true God. (Psalm 77.12)
  4. Pray that in their study of the true God, the people of God would be inoculated against the spiritual disease of idolatry, that they would not settle for ignorance, superstition, atheism, unworthy and wicked thoughts of God, but would love, admire, reverence, and serve Him, and that by these means the Lord would reveal Himself to them. (Luke 24.14-32)
  5. Pray that these meditations and studies would be the foundation of such love, reverence, and admiration of God that we would never use His Name superstitiously, lightly, irreverently, or in any other wicked way. (1 Samuel 4.3-5)
  6. Pray that when the people of God, and any others, invoke the name of God in their oaths and vows, that they would remember that it is the Name and Person of the great and terrible Jehovah that they invoke, and that this would be a hedge against all false-swearing, light or vain oaths, “minced” oaths, and anything other than earnestly and candidly telling the truth. (Zechariah 8.17)
  7. Pray that all light swearing would be stricken from the language of God’s people, that their “yea” would be “yea” and their “nay” would be “nay” that truth might reign among us as it regards our speech. (Matthew 5.37)
  8. Pray that as God often reveals Himself through providential events, that we would not misapply His providence, but would humbly receive Scriptural guidance to assist us in making a good use even of calamitous circumstances, with self-examination, repenting of sin, and seeking new obedience. (Ecclesiastes 8.11; Psalm 50.16-23)
  9. Pray that we would submit, according to the Scriptures, to God providential dealing with us. (Lamentations 3.20-41)
