The 2nd Commandment and the Regulation of Worship: Deuteronomy 12.1-32; John 4.22-24

Pray that the Church might put away all will worship, and serve the Lord according to His Commands.

  1. Pray that the Church would not observe extra-biblical times and seasons, but serve Him with gladness in the times of His Scriptural appointment, with ordinary and special services of His own appointment, and that the Lord would grant joy and contentment in her service to Him, refusing every false way, and loving His Word. (Galatians 4.10)
  2. Pray that the sung praise of the Church might be according to Scripture, that the people of God would sing the inspired Psalter—the Lord’s own “Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs” to Him with joy and gladness, with grace in their hearts, offering up the calves of their lips, singing with understanding. (Psalm 72.20 LXX; James 5.13; 1 Chronicles 16.9)
  3. Pray that the Church would promote the powerful preaching of the Word as an element of worship, that she would turn away from pep-talks, self-help sessions, feel-good stories, and that preaching would take on, more and more, the sound of the Scriptures, and the voice of Him who breathed them out. (2 Timothy 3.16-4.4; 1 Corinthians 1.18-24)
  4. Pray that the Word of God would be read, authoritatively, to the people of God in the worship service by their ministers, giving brief exposition for that portion of the Word that is read. (1 Timothy 4.13)
  5. Pray that prayer would be made in the worship of the Church, unto God, in the name of Christ, in a known and understood language, for things agreeable to his will, and that the people of God would all pray along with the one leading in prayer, with fervency, reverence, humility, faith, love toward God and one another, with importunity and perseverance, that the Lord might be pleased to hear and do all His holy will. (1 Corinthians 14.15-20)
  6. Pray that the sacraments might be administered according to the teaching and command of Christ, that all perversions and human accretions might be removed from the giving and receiving of the Sacraments of Christ, that as sighs, seals, and exhibitions of the Covenant of Grace they might be faithfully received, to the glory of the Lord. (Acts 2.42)
  7. Pray that special acts of worship, such as oaths, vows, fasting, and special times of thanksgiving might be used in a reverent and holy manner, and that the Church would refuse to add to the Lord’s prescription of worship elements, and order God’s worship by God’s commands. (Psalm 50.14; 56.12; Nahum 1.15)
