Self-examination and Confession of Sin

Pray for the Church concerning her practice of self-examination and confession of sin.

  1. Pray for all the members of the visible Church, that they would know the estate of their own hearts, and often betake themselves to an objective and sincere self-examination, and that the Lord would be pleased to meet them in their closets, and place His finger of truth upon those sins that ought to be confessed and forsaken. (Psalm 26.1-12)
  2. Pray for the Elders of the Church, especially those who labor in the Word, that our churches would encourage and advance the doctrine of self-examination, that the members of the Church would take to this teaching of Scripture, and that we might enjoy the benefits of this means of grace. (2 Corinthians 13.15)
  3. Pray for the Church, that she would also turn an eye of self-examination to the Church, and following the example of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Daniel ask the Lord for forgiveness from ecclesiastical sins, and that in order to do so she might search the Word of the Lord, to know, identify, confess, and forsake those sins. (Daniel 9.1-19)
  4. Pray that the Church would also look to her society, and following the Lord’s instruction in His Word, she might identify societal, state, and national sins, and would ask the Lord for mercy in these matters as well, and work in her place and station for the forsaking of these sins. (1 Timothy 2.1-8)
  5. Pray for owners of Christian businesses, and Christian employees, that they would examine themselves concerning their practices in commercial context, that they would confess and forsake those practices that are worldly, and work in accord with God’s commands for honesty, uprightness, diligence, excellence, serving the Lord Christ. (Col. 3.22-25)
  6. Pray for Christian parents, that they would teach their children the Law of God, that tenderly and gently they would teach them to know their own sins, to learn how to confess them, turn from them, and to turn to the Lord for mercy, and then to walk in greater sanctification. (Deuteronomy 4.9-14)
  7. Pray that Church would include in their corporate worship times where sin is identified and confessed, that the people of God corporately might learn to confess their sins, and turn from them all to the Lord, rejoicing in His mercy, being humbled and grieving over their sins. (Joel 2.1-17)
  8. Pray for that sanctification for the people of God which rises out of confession of sin. (1 John 1.9)
