Seeking First the Kingdom of God and proper Implications

Pray that the Church would seek the Kingdom of God before all else. (Haggai 1.1-15; Matthew 6.25-34)

  1. Pray for the Church, that she would not love this world, but love the Lord instead, would not place comfort, earthly recreation, pleasure, and leisure, even lawful ones, above the desire to serve the Lord as His people, and that her teaching would reflect the glory of the Kingdom of Christ eclipsing all other earthly things. (Psalm 145.10-21)
  2. Pray that the Church would not turn to the world for her theories, philosophy, practice, or for the ordering of any of her affairs, but that the visible Kingdom of Christ would be ordered by the Wonderful Counselor Himself, by His Word and Spirit, that the Church would not turn to the spirit of the age. (Hebrews 3.6; Psalm 2.6; Isaiah 9.6-7)
  3. Pray for the people of God, that they would be soldiers, and travelers through this life, rather than finding their satisfaction in this world, that, as Augustine taught, we would “love God, and use things.” Pray that we would bring all to the feet of our Father, through Christ, giving glory to Him in everything. (Hebrews 11.1-13; 1 Peter 2.11)
  4. Pray that the people of God would not endeavor to “serve to masters” but would cleave to Christ, and use the wealth of this world for that which glorifies the Lord. (Luke 16.1-17; 1 Timothy 6.17-19)
  5. Pray for the ministry of the Gospel, and for leaders in the Church, that they would look to Christ in all their leadership, that they would not be influenced by the spirit of the age—that they would not seek the approval or fellowship of the world, that they would reprove, and not approve of the evil works done in secret, or even openly. (Ephesians 5.11-13)
  6. Pray that when the kingdom of this world comes into conflict with the Kingdom of Christ, that the people of God would choose to follow Christ, that they would seek Him even when costly, choosing to suffer affliction with the people of God rather than to adopt the shibboleths of this world, living and speaking the truth, in holiness. (Josh. 24.15; Heb. 11.24-26)
  7. Pray especially concerning errors in our time—perversion of family and marriage, fornication, promiscuity, institutionalized sloth, indebtedness, covetousness, a mindset of deserving rather than serving, oppression of classes of people, tyrannical governments, and many other sins, that the people of God would not trust in politics, in violence, in protest, or in anything but the Lord and His ways, seeking first His Kingdom and its righteousness, before the watching world. (Matt. 20.20-28)
  8. Pray that the praises of our King, and talk of Him, would constantly be upon our lips as His people. (Psalm 145.1-8)
