Pray for the people of God, that under the Lord’s chastisements, they would profit spiritually.

Pray for the people of God, that under the Lord’s chastisements, they would profit spiritually. (1 Corinthians 11.23-34; Hebrews 12.1-17)

  1. Pray for the Church, that she might seek first the Kingdom of God, that temporal losses would not afflict nor affright her, but that she would give proper priority to Spiritual things. (Matthew 6.33)
  2. Pray that the Church would commit herself to the Lord in obedience, as He protector, obeying Him in all things, profiting spiritually in her devotion to Him from the afflictions He sends. (Psalm 94.1)
  3. Pray that the Church would learn obedience through suffering, following the example of Christ. (Hebrews 5.7-8)
  4. Pray that the Church would not murmur nor complain when the Lord chastises her, but that in His strokes she would see His fatherly care, and her devotion and obedience would flourish under it. (Lamentations 3.39-41)
  5. Pray that the members of the Church would support one another under times of affliction and difficulty, not with carnal pity, but with godly care and encouragement, speaking the truth in love one to another. (Ephesians 4.15-16)\
  6. Pray for our desires, that we would desire to be holy, like our heavenly Father, in all things, such that we would receive His chastisements gladly, with contentment, and an eye to our true desserts, that we might partake of His holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. (Hebrews 12.7-14)
  7. Pray for godly preaching in times of affliction, calling for repentance, contrition, and new obedience. Pray that the Lord would disabuse us of a carnal sympathy that we might learn to advance spiritually in hard times. (Daniel 9.1-20)
  8. Pray that God’s people would live that life separated unto the Lord, and from the world, and that the afflictions the Lord sends to us would augment that separated, holy living, that we would sorrow as those loved of the Lord. (1
    Corinthians 11.32; 1 Thessalonians 4.13)
  9. Pray that we would not charge God foolishly when He afflicts us, but remember that He deals with us gently as His children, for our good, for our repentance, restoration, and holiness, and not for our destruction. (Psalm 73.1-22)
