Pray for the Church and larger society, for a proper use of the Name of God, and His self-revelation

Pray for the Church and larger society, for a proper use of the Name of God, and His self-revelation to us.

  1. Pray for the Church, that she would set the proper tone and example for the watching world, using God’s Name with reverence, remembering His holiness, drawing near to Him with humility, and that she would avoid a crass and unbecoming familiarity with God. (Ezekiel 36:23)
  2. Pray for comprehensive instruction on the Name of God—that the Church would know God according to all of His revelation; Not only as merciful and gracious, slow to anger, abundant in goodness and truth, but as also the God who will not clear the guilty, visiting iniquity, that she might reverence Him according to truth. (Exodus 34:1-7)
  3. Pray for a proper use of the Name of God in taking oaths and vows, for the promotion of truth between men in such matters of weight and moment, that the people of God would not vow lightly, and vow and pay even when to keep our commitments is to our own hurt. (Psalm 15:1-5)
  4. Pray that the people of God would reverence, and use rightly, the Word of God, seeing He has magnified His Word as the primary way He makes Himself known. Pray that the Church would not pervert nor twist the Word of God to her own desire, or for worldliness, but would the Spirit of God, and Christ Himself, speaking therein, and humbly submit to His will in all things. (Psalm 138:2; 2 Peter 3:16)
  5. Pray for a Scriptural and wise use of God’s Providence, that when He moves in this world, we would not ignore His judgments and affliction, but in them to remember His mercy to the upright, His judgment of the wicked, and that we
would call upon Him in every circumstance of divine providence with reverence. (Haggai 2:17)
  6. Pray that the elements of worship would be rightly used by the people of God, with preparation, prayer, submission, humility; and that the people of God would look to the Lord as He advances His Name, and the Knowledge of God, through Sabbath, public worship, and all other times of private and secret worship. (Malachi 2:1-9; Nehemiah 8:1-12)
  7. Pray for the Church, for an end to superstitions, and superstitious uses of God’s appointed means, thinking that she can draw down God’s favor through an illicit use of even His appointments, that all of her use of His ordinances would be for His glory, according to His commands, unto His good pleasure. (Isaiah 1:10-20; Jeremiah 7:1-15)
  8. Pray for the people of God, that they would meditate upon the Triune God, learning to honor His Name, and that the Lord would bless those means of advancing His Name. (Psalm 63:6)
