Humility and Confession of Sin among the People of God

Pray for the people of God, for godly self-examination, confession of sin, and humility. (Psalm 32.1-11; 1 John 1.8-10)

  1. Pray that the officers of the Church would set a good example of humility, confession of sin, keeping short accounts with the Lord and with one another, seeking forgiveness, and so being an example to those under their care. (1 Peter 5.1-4)
  2. Pray for all in the Church, for objectivity, humility, and an understanding of the great spiritual need of self-examination, that the Lord would meet us in our closets, revealing our sins, according to His great mercy, that we might confess and forsake them, resting in His promise to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1.9)
  3. Pray that the people of God would have such sound relations one with another in love that we might be able, according to our various places, to assist one another in identifying our sins with godly correction, apart from censoriousness and rancor, for our mutual good, that we might all receive correction with thankfulness. (Psalm 141.5)
  4. Pray for sensitivity to the Lord and His commands, that we would “not be like the horse of mule,” insensitive to our sins and breaches of His commandments, but that the Lord would grant great spiritual tenderness of conscience, that it would truly grieve us to sin against Him, and go to Him with our confession. (Jeremiah 31.18; Psalm 32.9)
  5. Pray that along with humility and confession of sin, the Lord would grant repentance—the godly kind of repentance that does not need to be repented of, with godly sorrow, vehemence against sin, mortification, watchfulness against temptation, reverence for God and His commands, zeal for good works, and new obedience. (2 Cor. 7.10-11)
  6. Pray that the people of God would facilitate confession of sin and repentance among themselves by candor, earnest and serious conversation, understanding, forgiveness, watchfulness over one another, humility and acceptance of this true friendship and communion among one another, that we might magnify the Lord together. (Psalm 34.3)
  7. Pray that the preachers in our churches would preach the Law of the Lord, not as a justifying law, but to reveal our need of Christ’s perfection, and further as a means of self-examination, knowing the standard of perfection and glory that is pressed to every believer, that we might know our sins, and make confession of them before the Lord. (Isaiah 58.1)
  8. Pray for courage among the people of God, to dig deeply into their souls in self-examination, with confidence that the Lord is merciful to all who call upon Him, that we would not fear to “make a diligent search.” (Psalm 77.1-10)
