Confidence in the Purposes of God, His Mercy, and His Judgment

Pray that the Lord would rise up in defense of his people, and defend them from their enemies.

  1. Pray that Christ would be pleased to rule in the midst, or inward parts of His enemies, that many of the Lord’s current enemies would be converted to Himself, that those who were rebels would be called to Him. (Psalm 110.1-4)
  2. Pray that the enemies of God in high places, who will not be converted to Him, will be “struck through in the day of His wrath” that he would bring down the persecutors of His people, defend His own, and all for the glory of His Great Name. (Psalm 110.5-7)
  3. Pray that God’s people would remember the Lord’s sovereignty in all their afflictions and persecutions, making a good use in repentance, and calling upon the Lord for defense, that the Lord would bring to a close those particular works of his for their sanctification, and defend them from harm. (Isaiah 10.5-12)
  4. Pray that the enemies of God and His Church would not prevail, but that the Lord, for the sake of his Great Name, would restrain and conquer all His and our enemies, apprizing those who would rebel against Him that there is a God who judges righteously, that they might learn to call upon Him. (Psalm 13.1-6; Isaiah 42.13)
  5. Pray for the people of God, that they would have patience during afflicting and persecuting times, committing their case to Him, and confident in His vindication of them as His people, glorifying His own great name in due time, that they would wait upon the Lord, till He make their enemies their footstool, in Christ. (Hebrews 10.12-13)
  6. Pray for the advancement of God’s Great Name in every circumstance among the children of men—In mercy, through the preaching of the Gospel, calling sinners to faith in Christ, and being saved from the wrath to come; and in righteous judgment executed upon those rebels who will not have Christ to reign over them. (Luke 10.11-27)
  7. Pray that the people of God would learn to use Scripture rightly, taking encouragement from the “sudden” movements of God’s justice, that they might wait in hope, praying unto the Lord in days of threat and danger, knowing that the Lord can remove their enemies in a day, and to having hope. (Isaiah 37.33-38; Ezra 7.1-10)
  8. Pray for thankfulness and wisdom among the people of God, that in times of affliction and persecution they might look to the Lord, see His hand, and remember that although those who persecute them may “mean it for evil” that God intends it for good, and will accomplish much good in it. (Genesis 50.15-21)
