Pray for the Church, that she would desire that which is holy and good

Pray for the Church, that she would desire that which is holy and good, and turn away from all carnal desire. (Micah 2:1-5; Romans 7:7-13; 1 Cor. 12:28; 14.1, 39)

  1. Pray for the people of God, that they would learn to regulate their desires according to the Word of the Lord, in holiness and righteousness, seeking first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. (Matthew 6:30-34)
  2. Pray that the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, would not choke out the Word of the Lord that it become unfruitful to us. (Matthew 13:22)
  3. Pray for Christian parents, that they would teach their children to be content, that they also would themselves show an example of contentedness to their children and others, that we would not serve our desires covetously, being released from that bondage by our Lord Jesus Christ. (Titus 3:1-9)
  4. Pray that the Lord would humble His people with the reminder that covetousness is idolatry, and that we would be rightly affected by it so as to avoid covetousness as we would all other forms of idolatry. (Col. 3:5-7; Ephesians 5:3-5)
  5. Pray that the Lord would grant us contentment in the things of this world, and godly, earnest desire (the good covetousness) for the things of His Spirit. (1 Timothy 6:11)
  6. Pray for the people of God, that we would be an example to the world, in that we rejoice at the advancement of our neighbor, even those that are our enemies, that we honor and respect his property as well as his gifts and graces, that
these godly motions would rise out of our hearts in sincerity, and that all envy and strife would melt away as in these things we learn to love our neighbor as ourselves. (Job 31:29; Matthew 5:44)
  7. Pray that, instead of clutching and holding tightly the things of this world in covetousness, that we would be openhanded, generous, and liberal in the temporal gifts we have received, as stewards, and not possessors, of the good gifts of God. (Deuteronomy 15:4; Proverbs 11:25; 28:27)
  8. Pray for an attitude of selflessness, that we would look with kindness upon the needs of others, rather than our own desires—that the Lord would be pleased to grant that we might place ourselves in another’s circumstances in order to
do him good, leaving off our own desire, learning self-sacrifice instead, after Christs own example. (Philippians 2:1-11)
  9. Pray for a close watch upon our souls, that this sin would hollow out any vestige of self-righteousness as we realize how often we are found in it, that we would seek forgiveness and sanctification. (Romans 7:7-9)
