Kingdom and Covenant focus for God’s people

Pray that the professing Church would set her affections on heavenly things. (Colossians 3.1-17; 1 Chronicles 22.16)

  1. Pray for the sound preaching of the Word, that preachers would not distract the people of God from seeking first the Kingdom with thoughts of earthly delight, wealth, pleasure-seeking, or other such fleeting satisfactions, but would present the Christian life as one of devotion and sacrifice, taking up the cross daily. (Luke 9.23-27)
  2. Pray that the people of God would learn to make choices of where to live, work, recreate, rest, and all other phases of this life according to how it might advance the Kingdom of Christ, bring glory to Christ, and how in all these things they might serve Christ and not just seek to please themselves. (John 4.34; Romans 15.1)
  3. Pray that the people of God would not default in their behavior to that which is easy, but would learn to sacrifice convenience when such focus advances the interests of Christ in this world—that not only would we learn not to “spend our money for that which is not bread,” but that we would not advance the interests of the enemies of the Lord in our commerce, recreation, and other areas of spending, seeking the kingdom of the Lord. (2 Chronicles 19.2; 32.1-8)
  4. Pray that God’s people would support and help one another according to their covenant responsibility in temporal needs, with mutual encouragement to holiness and obedience, in seeking and finding wisdom from the Word of the Lord, that we might learn not to look to the enemies of the Lord for our help. (1 Corinthians 6.1-8)
  5. Pray that the religious interests of God people would not be secondary, that our priorities would run to that which is eternal, that our temporal concerns would be ordered according to eternal truths, that our lives would manifest to the watching world that our hearts are dedicated to Christ and His Word. (1 Timothy 6.17-19)
  6. Pray that in times of opposition to the truths of Scripture, and opposition to those who hold the Scriptures and the God of the Scriptures dear, that God’s people would show their dedication and love to Christ by standing firm upon His truth and morality, not compromising for the sake of fear of temporal decline. (1 Peter 3.10-17)
  7. Pray for the Church for constancy in the mindset of Christ, following His example of obedience, making use of opportunities to speak and to act as His people. That as He said, “I must work the works of Him that sent me, while it is day,” that we too would learn to redeem the time for His sake. (John 9.4; Ephesians 5.16; Colossians 4.5)
  8. Pray that the Lord would remove all vestiges of practical atheism from our lives, that we would live all of our lives before His watching gaze, giving glory to Him in all our actions, confessing sin, learning in all to glorify Him. (1 Peter 4.11)
