Godly Civil Government as a Divine Institution

Pray for Civil Leaders, and for Professing Christians, and their duty regarding proper civil authority and its use. (Romans 12.1-10)

  1. Pray that the Church would exercise her prophetic voice to the world, and particularly to the civil leaders of our land, that they might learn to rule in their offices as those who will give answer to the Judge of all the Earth, and that as God’s ministers, they are require to promote that which is good and upright in the sight of God, and to discourage and punish evil as God’s agents of vengeance; that God has put them in office and requires that they serve Him. (Romans 13.1-6)
  2. Pray that Christians would not be rebels, but models of uprightness, calling upon the Lord in all they do in the public square as the servants of the Lord, making known the righteousness and holiness of our God, exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit, against which there is no law. (Galatians 5.22-23)
  3. Pray for reformation in the Church, that as judgment begins at the house of God it may make its way from her doors into this world as well, as civil leaders are called to faith in Christ by the upright conversation of His people. (1 Peter 2.13-17)
  4. Pray for the people of God, that their adherence to the Word of the Lord, and obedience to the wise statutes and commandments of the Lord, might present a powerful apologetic and witness to the world, that this would have influence in our civil structures of authority, to the glory of God, and to the subduing of leaders to the Lord. (Deuteronomy 4.5-8)
  5. Pray that civil magistrates would not fear the Kingdom of Christ, but would promote the interests of the true Church, that we all might lead quiet and peaceable lives in all godliness and honesty, and that the Church would be understood as an adornment to any earthly kingdom, not a competitor to it. (1 Timothy 2.1-8)
  6. Pray that the laws set forth in the Scripture, being properly used and applied, might form the basis of true morality in the state, that the laws of nations might conform to the law of God, that what is right, and what is wrong, according to the Law of the Lord, might be understood and enforced by believing civil authorities, that the Lord, according to His promise, would be pleased to exalt any nation that honors Him. (Proverbs 16.12; 29.14)
  7. Pray for godly influence in the palaces of power in our nation, states, and localities, that civil leaders might have godly counselors, knowing and teaching the Word of the Lord to our leaders, and that they might hear, and humble themselves before the Lord, that He might be pleased to extend and beautify their reign. (Proverbs 29.4; 20.8; 25.5)
